Guests often ask about the marine life spotted around Sun Siyam Olhuveli while planning their holiday experience. The pleasant surprise of seeing underwater marvels from the surface, such as the greetings from the Maldives Manta Rays, seems to be a real treat for all guests.

During one such experience, a visiting family had just finished their dinner. They were leaving the Sunset Restaurant when they saw a small crowd at the jetty and curiously walked over. When they saw the spectacle, they were astonished.

Six giant Manta Rays moved gracefully in the crystal clear waters. Similar to watching a large butterfly or a massive bird flying through the water, the gentle flap of its enormous wings will enthral you with gratitude for the Maldives’ underwater world.

There are different types of rays in the Maldives but those seen at Olhuveli are Reef Manta Rays in Maldives, easily differentiated by the V-shaped pattern on their back, unlike the T shape on the less commonly spotted Oceanic Manta Rays.

Manta Rays frequent Olhuveli to filter feed on planktons; the storm of tiny organisms seen when a light is turned on in the sea at night. Similar to moths, planktons are also drawn to light.

Wondering about the Manta Ray season Maldives? Luckily, it is all year around. Except for rainy days and rough seas, about four to six Mantas roam the jetty daily from around 7pm till midnight.
